Workplace Nightmare: AI Software Tracks 30-Second Breaks And Alert Boss; Internet Slams ‘Treating People Like Machines’

A techie’s post on the r/sysadmin subreddit exploded over the toxic employee tracking software with AI- integration that monitors the employees, collecting standard data including keylogging, mouse movement, tracks of programs opened and the frequency of the activity, real-time recordings, heat maps of your clicks on a website, and screenshots of the desktop every 10 seconds to 5 minutes. The software doesn’t stop there. It enables the manager to classify their staff into “work category,” and deploying the integrated AI, a “productivity graph” is created that tells individual activities, including the number of backspaces used, typing speed and accuracy, the number of programs opened, and the volume of work mails opened, among other infographics. These “work categories” of different employees are compared, and if a staff falls behind a certain benchmark, they get a red flag for review and have to justify on the work portal about the productivity gap. The AI also keeps track of breaks, sending a red flag if there is no activity (meaningful mouse movement) for more than 30-60 seconds. The techie also remarked that the same company that sells this suit also sells AI automation services.

Reactions poured in with netizens slamming the toxic company, toxic management, toxic board, and the vile AI software. Others reminded that Microsoft’s Viva collects similar data. A handful of users online stated that Apple support has a similar stringent toxic policy of not overshooting breaks beyond 3 minutes during working hours. A 5-minute delay would get an alert from the manager and subsequently a call, and then removal of access. One netizen slammed the toxic work environment enabled by the corporate, fueled by AI: “Treating people like machines gets you people thinking like machines—it’s not great for the longevity of the company.”
