TikTok to Compile Library of Users’ Voices for AI

TikTok appears to be working on a new text-to-speech product that would allow users to add their voice to a library of options for AI voice-overs.

The project was uncovered by a data miner who found lines of code referencing the project in the app’s newest update. The data miner was even able to get some of the functions to work, accessing a series of screens that summarized the product followed by four pages of terms and conditions.

“Create your voice with AI,” the introductory page reads. “Record yourself speaking and we’ll process that recording on TikTok, and use information about your voice to generate your AI voice.”

“TikTok claims that it can create an AI verison of your voice in just 10 seconds,” The SpAndroid wrote.

“Your AI voice will be private, and you can delete it at any time,” the page continued, addressing any concerns about the feature’s privacy.

Agreeing to the terms of conditions currently brings users to a blank page, presumably because the project is still in early development. While the feature could be fun for users to mess around with, it also poses serious safety concerns.

Depending on how the voice library is handled, bad actors could use to system’s catalog to aid them in their nefarious practices. Scam callers are already targeting millions of parents, using AI voices that sound like their kids to make them believe they have been taken.

“All [the scammer] needs is a short audio clip of your family member’s voice — which he could get from content posted online — and a voice-cloning program,” the FTC warned last year. “When the scammer calls you, he’ll sound just like your loved one.”

An AI library of voices on TikTok could lead to these schemes being easier to pull off.

Furthermore, if celebrities were to upload their voices to the library, they could potentially be used to create more convincing deepfakes, a problem already advancing at an alarming rate due to the overall advancement in AI.

A voiceover tool isn’t the only project TikTok is working on in regards to AI. A product much further in development is a tool that helps users receive information quickly by summarizing the results of a search.

TikTok appears to be toying with adding AI to its platform, launching a service that would summarize the top videos that appear from a search result.

Though the product is currently limited, select search results now include “AI search highlights” summarizing the information found in the top videos.

“AI Smart Search provides ChatGPT answers to search queries. TikTok’s algorithm displays these answers when it finds them relevant to your search,” TikTok explained of its new feature, per The Verge. “As this feature is new, errors like inaccurate or irrelevant answers could sometimes occur.”
