The Spider-Verse Will Never Incorporate AI Art, Writer Promises

Sony may be planning to embrace the use of artificial intelligence with future movies and TV shows, but that’s not going to apply to every title released by the company. The anticipated sequel, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, is promised to use any AI at all.

After it was confirmed by Sony CEO Tony Vinciquerra that the company will be using AI for future projects, one fan took to the social media platform X to voice concerns over this happening with Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. It was pleaded for Sony to keep AI away from movies, but especially Beyond the Spider-Verse, perhaps given the franchise’s unique art style. Producer and co-writer Christopher Miller responded to this fan post to assure everyone that the film will not be using AI whatsoever, going on to share the negative opinion he has about the rise of this practice in the film industry.

Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah delve into rumors about them making Tom Holland’s Spider-Man 4 while sharing which franchise star they want to return.

“There is no generative AI in Beyond the Spider-Verse and there never will be,” Miller said. “One of the main goals of the films is to create new visual styles that have never been seen in a studio CG film, not steal the generic plagiarized average of other artists’ work.”

The movie series began in 2018 with the release of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. This was followed by the 2023 sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Both movies were very highly acclaimed, and each one was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature — with Into the Spider-Verse winning. Beyond the Spider-Verse was previously dated for a March 2024 release, but it was pulled from the schedule in 2023. A new date hasn’t yet been set.

Meanwhile, Sony’s push for AI is said to be a result of the company looking to cut costs. Vinciquerra directly said that movies are so expensive to make that incorporating AI is going to wind up saving them a lot of money moving forward. Sony making that bold step may also have a domino effect with other studios following suit. In any case, it’s looking like there may be no stopping the rise of AI in Hollywood.

AI Use Will Cut Down on Costs

“We are very focused on AI. The biggest problem with making films today is the expense,” Vinciquerra explained at a Sony investor event. “We will be looking at ways to…produce both films for theaters and television in a more efficient way, using AI primarily.”

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse doesn’t yet have a release date.
