From strawberry to pumpkin spice, latte, peach and vanilla, we love a good food-themed beauty trend. Fittingly, this season’s new kid at the salon is just as delicious. Raise a glass, y’all—”Moscow mule” nails are going to be the new hot look for autumn. According to Pinterest, searches for the nail trend are at an all-time high, and, of course, the look is all over TikTok. Here’s everything you need to know about this metallic manicure that’s perfect for fall, plus what to ask for at the nail salon.
What Are “Moscow Mule” Nails?
If you’ve ever had a Moscow mule, you know the drink is served in a signature copper mug, piled with ice and the ubiquitous slice of lime. But it’s not the boozy sip itself that serves as inspiration for this nail trend; rather it’s the glistening copper cup it comes in. Come fall and winter, we’re ready to pull out our neutrals in all manner of browns, blacks, navies and grays. Boring? Hold the phone. Moscow mule nails prove that neutrals can be fun and exciting.
The design is credited to TikTok creator @noorphin, who posted a video captioned, “Did I just get THE nails of fall 2024?” in which she flaunted her soft metallic nails in a light-reflecting copper shade. Her post garnered nearly 47,000 likes and hundreds of enthusiastic comments.
What Are “Moscow Mule” Nails?
As the name suggests, searches for Moscow mule nails turn up a bevy of photos and videos of copper-chrome nails. The most faithful rendition would be a shade close to the soft metallic of the eponymous mug, but as long as you stay within the orange-hued spectrum and add the chrome component, you’re flying.
While it’s no doubt a fun twist on a staple fall color, I can hardly say I’m surprised by the trend. Brown nails have been everywhere lately; I spotted them on Selena Gomez at the Telluride Film Festival and on Hailey Bieber in a post-mani Instagram story. Still, the metallic touch adds more dimension to the look, and certainly makes basic brown nails feel a lot more festive.
How to Get the Look
In the video, Noor shares that she asked for black dip powder topped with copper chrome to create the shimmering hue. In the comments section, someone asks if the nails can be achieved using black gel polish with a copper chrome coat, also to the affirmative.
If you’re opting to DIY, you can opt for chrome finishes like OPI’s Great Copper-tunity ($14), which can be used on both gel and lacquer polishes. Looking for a one-and-done? Try Olive & June’s Penny ($8), Essie’s Rust Worthy ($14) or OPI’s Worth a Pretty Penny ($12; $8). Safe to say, all that glitters isn’t gold.
