SLB and NVIDIA partner on generative AI for energy sector

SLB is enhancing its collaboration with NVIDIA to create GenAI solutions specifically tailored for the energy sector.

This partnership aims to expedite the development and implementation of GenAI foundation models across SLB’s global platforms.

These platforms include the Delfi digital platform and the Lumi data and AI platform, utilising NVIDIA’s NeMo, a component of the NVIDIA AI Enterprise software suite.

Under the collaboration, SLB and NVIDIA will work together to build and fine-tune AI models that cater to the unique demands of the data-heavy energy industry.

The focus areas include subsurface exploration, production operations and data management.

By doing so, the companies aim to maximise the potential of GenAI for energy domain experts such as researchers, scientists and engineers, allowing them to engage with complex technical processes to achieve higher value and lower carbon footprints.

Since 2008, SLB and NVIDIA have been working together, initially pioneering the use of graphics processing units for subsurface imaging and geoscience interpretation.

Over the years, the partnership has worked on enhancing each generation of SLB’s high-performance compute and visualisation technologies on the Delfi platform.

SLB CEO Olivier Le Peuch said: “As we navigate the delicate balance between energy production and decarbonisation, generative AI is emerging as a crucial catalyst for change.

“Our collaboration with NVIDIA will accelerate the creation of tailored generative AI solutions, enabling our customers to optimise operations, enhance efficiency and minimise their overall footprint.”

NVIDIA founder and CEO Jensen Huang said: “Custom models created by SLB leveraging NVIDIA NeMo will provide the industry’s scientists and engineers unprecedented insight to speed their work in optimising the energy supplies today and unlocking the clean energy innovations of tomorrow.”

In a separate development, SLB and Aramco recently entered an agreement to co-develop and use digital solutions aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions in industrial sectors.

These solutions will be incorporated into SLB’s digital sustainability platform, which was initially announced in 2022.

The platform is designed to help industrial companies expedite their journey towards net zero by simplifying the measurement, reporting and verification of emissions.

Earlier in July, SLB announced a partnership with Aker BP to co-develop an AI-driven digital platform, with the goal of driving innovation and efficiency across Aker BP’s exploration and production operations.
