Meet Jill McCormick of Emerald Editing + Copywriting in South Texas – Voyage Dallas Magazine

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jill McCormick.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
There is something in your life you love doing. Whether it’s your hobby or career, something you do makes your heart happy. What is it?

Words make my heart happy.

As a little girl, I wrote fictional stories about a mouse king who lived in a land of triangles. As a tween, I wrote Vacation Bible School curriculum (you know, how you do when you’re 12). And at Texas A&M University, I majored in journalism, not because I wanted to be a reporter, but because I wanted professional training in the art and science of effective communication.

My career path has been unusual. I worked in professional sports, higher education, trucking, healthcare, and served on a church staff. Communication was crucial in every job. Throughout my career, I’ve communicated expectations with clients, delivered recruitment talks to promote on-campus involvement, and written marketing newsletters.

Words are what make every life and business work.

After I left my role at the church in 2016, I started a blog (jillemccormick.com) and began speaking to women’s organizations about how high-achieving women can receive God’s grace.

I loved writing my own words to encourage and support women who were exhausted from doing more and trying harder. But as much as I loved creating my own content, I wanted to help others share their stories.

So I started a business to do just that.

Emerald Editing + Copywriting started in September 2018 to help people craft words and messages that worked for them. As any entrepreneur will tell you, businesses are often years in the making before they launch into the world. In my life, I spent y-e-a-r-s refining my writing (and I still work on my craft). I spent time cultivating relationships. I earned respect from people because I showed up and helped out.

It’s so important to do work you love, but love isn’t the only factor that keeps you in business. Doing what you love + time + relationships = a sustainable business. I’m thankful I do what makes my heart happy.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Nothing is ever smooth. Or linear. Or up-and-to-the-right, is it? While you and I want immediate growth and success, business and life don’t work that way.

For me, the bumpiest aspect of business is the fact that my work and income are project based. I experience quite a bit of uncertainty, which is hard for someone who loves a plan.

God and I talk a lot about clients and how He’ll provide in His timing, His way. As a Christ-centered businesswoman, I depend on what God provides, when He provides it, while also working hard at what I can do.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Emerald Editing + Copywriting story. Tell us more about the business.
It’s tough to write and edit all the content it takes to run a business in today’s marketplace. For example, entrepreneurs and small business owners must craft website copy, tag lines, headlines, blog posts, and so on and so on forever.

Writing a book is not for the faint of heart either because you must create a story arc, carry out your theme, and hook your reader from the first word.

But what if someone could help you write and edit all the content you must create?

What would it feel like to pass the baton over to a writer who writes five days a week for her own business and for others?

It would feel amazing.

And for those ready to feel amazing, experience less stress, and off-load hours of work from their plate, Emerald Editing + Copywriting is here to serve.

As a copywriter, I write content for companies, small businesses, and entrepreneurs. As an editor, I edit books, devotionals, and website copy. Crafting words that work is my specialty because it saves time, energy, and your sanity.

For the business owner or writer who needs encouragement, I am the copywriter + editor for you. Creating content and generating ideas as you stare at a blank screen is mentally and emotionally exhausting. It’s a gift when someone comes alongside you to spur you on to keep doing what you love. We all need a cheerleader. For my clients, I’m a cheerleader who also knows capitalization and grammar!

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Luck doesn’t play a role.

God plays a role. Perseverance plays a role. Hard work, skills, and talents play a role. Relationships play a role. Luck is not a part of life or business. I am so thankful that God strategically placed me where He did so I get to do what I love.
