Is Content Creation Worth It? Former Country Star and Wife Weigh In

By Movieguide® Contributor

Former country star Granger Smith and his wife Amber are getting into the nitty-gritty of being a content creator.

In a recent episode of “The Granger Smith Podcast,” the couple answered a question from a stay-at-home mom who wants to get into content creation but is worried about it taking time away from her kids.

“She wants to make money, which is not bad,” Amber said. “As a wife, you know, you want to bring in something, but her role — as in, how God created her — is to be home with the family, with the kids, and that’s her main ministry.”

She continued, “I struggle with that, too, because I do work on Instagram and social media, and I feel that sometimes, this is taking away from some of my time with the kids.”

Smith mentioned that, even though Amber has been working on her social media presence since before the two even started dating, she is still not in a place where content creation could be a full-time job.

Amber agreed, calling the money she makes off her social media posts “fun, supplemental income.”

Smith added, “[It’s] incredible and a huge blessing, but it’s not you full-time working.”

“I think if you said, ‘I love social media, I love doing this, I’m really gung-ho about it,’ I would say, ‘Well, then keep going,’” he continued, addressing the woman who asked the question. “Because the truth is, it’s extremely hard to get to a place where you could actually make money on social media.”

The couple then talked about their own efforts to stay off social media. Smith mentioned that they started using something called “The Brick,” adding, “It just keeps me accountable.”

Per the product’s website, the Brick is “a device that temporarily removes distracting apps (and their notifications) from your phone — leaving only the powerful tools you choose.”

Amber shared that using the Brick made her see how often she was picking up her phone whenever she was bored — “You realize how often you’re doing it mindlessly.”

Smith frequently shares advice like this on his podcast. In one recent episode, he spoke about the dangers of smartphones.

While Smith has left his country music career behind, he isn’t done making music. He recently announced a live album of his final show on the Like A River Farewell Tour that took place last year.

“Surprise! We captured every moment from that final show of the Like A River Farewell tour and decided to make a live record!” he posted on Instagram. “This will be a special album to me for the rest of my life. So many memories that night, my heart is full. If you didn’t make it to that show, I invite you to relive it with us one track at a time!”
