A definitive guide to campus fashion
With university campuses being host to all kinds of people, they are also home to all kinds of fashion. Many students see going to campus as an opportunity to put together their best outfits. Others just want to be as comfortable as possible. Some people follow internet trends religiously, whilst others prioritise practicality and simplicity in their wardrobe.
Whatever your stance is, here are the eight different styles you are bound to see on a King’s College London campus.
1. Athleisure
These people are either going to the gym after their class or they want to look like they are going to the gym after their class.
Typically this style includes lots of Gymshark, New Balances, hoodies, and visible crew socks.
2. The walking Pinterest board
This style refers to those who follow current trends, specifically trends you’ll see after two minutes scrolling on Pinterest or TikTok.
At the moment, this style is veering towards Adidas Spezials or Ugg boots, combined with relaxed jeans and jumpers, and leather jackets.
3. The skirts and boots/heels combo
Each King’s campus is also home to people sporting mini skirts and boots. This is perhaps due to the influence of the ‘frazzled English woman’ aesthetic (à la Bridget Jones) or a lean towards more formal, office-style wear.
A special shoutout goes out to those bold and brave enough to opt for heeled boots. I would even argue that these people deserve their own category.
4. Socially acceptable pyjamas
This look is fairly self explanatory, and exists in every university campus across the globe.
It entails wearing the closest thing you can to pyjamas whilst still having on an outfit that is acceptable to leave the house in.
Think flared leggings and joggers, cosy jumper, oversized tees, and the occasional pair of linen trousers.
5. A trench coat and…
Perhaps this is a very London thing, but you will often see KCL students wearing trench coats. What they’re wearing underneath often becomes irrelevant, but it can range from jeans to skirts to leggings.
This look is especially popular with humanities students and Strandies.
6. The ‘did you know I play [insert sport here]?’
Whether they play rugby or netball, or whether they play for GKT or KCL, most people on sports teams want everyone to know that they are on a sports team. A lot of them seem to be doing a challenge of how much sports team merch they can fit into one outfit.
A notable mention in this category goes to quarter zip fleeces with the KCL or GKT logo on the front.
7. The ‘how are you not cold?’
This look often resembles something you would wear on a night out or in the middle of summer, and makes you think: “How are you not cold?”
It typically includes a cute cami top, a skirt or jeans and rarely involves a jacket. Those who opt for this style, especially in the harsh British climate, are truly built different.
8. The ‘English literature student’
This look also exists in every other humanities subject, but to me the English Lit student epitomises this. Doc Martens are a must, as well as cardigans, skirts and tights- and of course a general air of quirkiness.
If you see someone dressed like this, its safe to assume they are on their way to a lecture about Shakespeare.
