Apple last month announced its partnership with OpenAI to offer users the option to get more AI power with iOS 18 and macOS Sequoia. According to Apple, its in-house Apple Intelligence will bring a suite of AI features to help users, but to get more insights from AI, Apple will allow users to tap into the intelligence of ChatGPT. However, Apple will not limit to ChatGPT and confirmed that it will soon bring more options for other chatbots, including Google’s Gemini AI.
Craig Federighi, Apple’s head of software engineering, highlighted in a recent interview that the company intends to bring support for more AI chatbots with iOS 18 and MacOS Sequoia. Now in his latest newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman revealed that Apple has been actively negotiating with Google and Anthropic to integrate their AI technologies into Apple’s platforms. According to Gurman, Apple is expected to take ahead its partnership with Google this fall, coinciding with the public release of Apple Intelligence. The integration of Google’s Gemini AI is anticipated to further enhance the capabilities of Apple’s AI systems, offering users a broader array of AI-powered functionalities.
Earlier reports circulated that Apple is in talks with Meta to offer Meta Platforms Inc.’s Llama chatbot as an option alongside OpenAI. However, Gurman suggests that this deal wasn’t going to happen. The two companies did had a brief conversion about the partnership but, Apple now has no plans to integrate Meta services into its platforms.
Apple Intelligence coming this fall
Meanwhile, Apple Intelligence is set to debut later this year as part of the iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia updates. Initially available in US English, the feature will support iPhone 15 Pro, and iPad and Mac models equipped with the M1 chip or later. Apple plans to expand the availability of these features to more languages over time, ensuring a wider reach for its advanced AI capabilities.
Apple Intelligence leverages Apple’s proprietary on-device and online language models to perform tasks such as answering questions, summarising text, and generating images. Apple explains that to handle AI requests from its devices, Apple has built a Private Cloud Compute (PCC) server. This server processes the data and then deletes all information after the task is completed, ensuring that no data is saved with Apple. Additionally, Apple will ensure that user data is encrypted from the device to the validated PCC node, prioritising user privacy and security.
While Apple Intelligence will be capable to handle most of the tasks, for queries that exceed its capabilities, Apple Intelligence will prompt users for permission to access ChatGPT or other chatbots when available, providing more options and enhance user experience.
