I woke up today and I’m about as sharp as unpopped popcorn.
Attended one kid’s graduation yesterday – got to sleep at around October (read: past my normal bedtime of 7pm, more like 10:30pm), woke up around 2 and yep….
Made my morning coffee and feel totally smooshilated.
Thing is…
I’ve got stuff to do.
Need to take kids to activities…
Need to create today’s overall self-confidence challenge…
Got my own work to do….
In other words….
… I cannot crumple into a heap, as much as I’d like to.
I can’t be as good to myself as I’d like to (normally when I’m this zombiefied… I take off the day. Â But my responsibilities preclude me from doing that).
So here’s what I did.
1.) Â First, I shared my alert-as-a-fossilized-clam mode with a friend I trust.
Putting into words what I was feeling (okay, typing it out)… helped me accept that alrighty, today might be a weeeeee bit of a challenge.
And that’s okay.
2.) Â Then I made myself coffee.
Because coffee. Â Also, it got me mechanically moving and any mechanical moving is Good Moving. Â PlusOne, remember!
3.) Â Then I mentally sketched out what really is CRITICAL today.
This is what I got:
- Family stuff ==> critical.
- Daily Self -confidence Challenge ==> critical.
- Business emails ==> critical.
- Everything else…. ==> can put off.
But the next step is where the goodness happened:
4.) Â I gave myself permission to be okay with letting go of the Everything Else in Step 3… and being good to myself.
See, the fact is….
You are in control of your actions.
You tell your body what to do and your mind… what to let go.
Make no mistake, that can take personal strength.
Because so often…
… we take care of everyone else (their needs are more important than our needs!)…
… and refuse to bestow that care upon ourselves.
Sucks to be us sometimes, wouldn’t you agree?
Being able to put yourself first…
… no matter how small an action…
It can require real personal strength.
Personal strength to let go of the little voices that tell you you’re not worthy of self-care.
Personal strength to ignore what other people might say to you and your choices.
And it’s okay if you don’t have that now.
But! Â Here’s what I want you to do for today’s mini-personal challenge.
Take only 3 minutes (so it’s easy!) and write down 3 ways you can quickly be good to yourself.
They might include:
- Indulge in comfort good
- Go to the gym and be good to your body as it deserves
- Choose a book that always makes you feel good to read and commit to having it readily available to inspire you
- Determine what are your favorite Feel Good sites and bookmark them
- Promise yourself that at a specific time, you will get up and walk outside, or watch funny videos, or so something where you can relax.
Okay?

Pick 3 quick, easy ways you can be good to yourself when time is at a premium….
And the next time you feel overwhelmed….
Adapt the steps above to you…
Revisit your 3 ways to treat yourself well…
And then give yourself permission to make it happen.
Remember.
Self-confidence requires you to put the same value on yourself as you do on others.
Challenge yourself to do that today.
Woot!
