For many, Pinterest is a go-to platform for ideas, inspiration, and creativity. But for Muskan Rawat, it has been much more—it’s been a constant companion, a source of comfort, and a springboard into her career as a content creator. In this interview, Muskan shares her earliest memories of discovering Pinterest, how it has influenced her creative journey, and her insights into the platform’s role in shaping trends and shopping habits worldwide.
Q1: Take us down memory lane and tell us about your first experience with Pinterest.
Muskan: I was in 4th or 5th grade when I first discovered Pinterest. My elder sister installed it on our iPad, and I used to binge-watch cake-making videos! They were so satisfying to watch, and I still remember how all I ever wanted at that point was a Mickey Mouse-shaped cake for my birthday because I saw someone make it from scratch on Pinterest!
Q2: If you had to describe yourself in one word, what would it be and why?
Muskan: I think everyone has started calling me “Pinterest IRL,” so maybe that? I mean, I do seek a lot of comfort from that app. It’s different from other social media channels; it’s therapeutic, and I’ve already created my dream life on it!
Q3: What inspired you to start content creation? What challenges do you face while creating content?
Muskan: The mere act of creation and the idea of a virtual community really inspired me to take up content creation. I always wanted a community that I could call mine, and content creation gave me that—a community that truly and genuinely cares about me and my work! However, it comes with multiple challenges, be it endless multitasking, creative blocks, self-doubt, and whatnot! But I feel like I’m here for it all. Like Taylor Swift rightly said, “I get tired a lot, but I never get tired of it,” and these lines hit hard. Even though content creation can be tiring, I’m never getting tired of it!
Q4: How did your friends and family react when you decided to pursue content creation?
Muskan: My sister, as I mentioned before, was the one who pushed me into this space, and I am forever grateful to her and my mum! They have both loved what I do since the very beginning, and I’ve received all the support and love from them. They are the reason why I never gave up and always believe in myself—because they believe in me and what I do!
Q5: How do you draw inspiration from Pinterest?
Muskan: I spend the majority of my day on Pinterest, and I feel like, at the end of the day, content for me is about lifestyle, and that’s where Pinterest steps in. It shows you trends in a more holistic way. Sometimes when I’m looking at outfits, makeup looks, or anything else, it instantly gives me ideas for content that I can create on Instagram or YouTube!
Q6: In what ways does Pinterest differ from other social media platforms? How do you set yourself apart from the competition?
Muskan: Pinterest is primarily a search-based platform filled with nothing but good vibes! It’s the app most people use to generate content for other platforms. While other platforms can sometimes be a bit negative, Pinterest is all about keeping up the good energy. It’s for everyone, no matter what your aesthetic is.
Over time, I’ve evolved a lot, and one thing I’ve realised is that being your true self can set you apart from the crowd because there is no Muskan Rawat in this whole world—just me. So, I have the power to be myself and then find my tribe. I think that’s what I do: I create, and I curate!
Q7: On a global scale, how does Pinterest influence shopping habits?
Muskan: These days, every other person wants something they first saw on Pinterest, so major design inspiration for many businesses comes from there. While shopping, we also refer to the app—we literally want what we saw on Pinterest! We’re all familiar with “Pinterest-inspired outfits”; that’s such a huge trend. Additionally, the app’s actual shopping experience is amazing. You click on an image, and you’re redirected to the product purchase link (if the original person has linked it). This level of seamless shopping hasn’t been done so well by other platforms on their main feed.
Q8: What is your favourite aspect of content creation?
Muskan: The process! It gives me joy, teaches me so many things, and helps me build a relationship with myself and others.
Q9: Do you think Pinterest will experience significant growth in the coming years?
Muskan: Yes! For sure. Even though it has always been a low-key app, I feel like it’s going to level up in ways we can’t imagine. People are starting to understand it better, and it’s so helpful to everyone—whether you’re a customer, a business, or just a regular person who’s focused on their life.
