(ABC 6 News) – A new phishing scam is targeting Minnesotans, according to Olmsted County officials.
Olmsted County says that scammers are sending emails pretending to be from the county to extort money from residents using fake invoices. The emails are coming from free email accounts like Hotmail or Gmail.
County officials cite a recent example that happened in Dodge County. They say a resident received an email seemingly from the county administrator, asking the person to wire money for a property permit invoice.
Olmsted County says there are a few things to look out for if you receive one of these emails:
- Invoices will not come from personal county staff emails
- County officials will never send emails from Hotmail, Gmail, or other free email accounts
- Real county emails end in olmstedcounty.gov
If you receive one of these fake emails, contact the county right away.
