The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education believes a recent phishing attempt targeted Missouri school districts, according to a statement on the department’s website.
An email posing as a DESE official was sent on Monday to school districts. The email asked individuals to click a link to confirm and update personal information, including their name, phone number and email, according to DESE’s statement.
The email appeared to be sent from DESE, but the email address was not a dese.mo.gov email address, according to the statement.
In the statement, the department reiterated that a link will never be sent to update information. Instead, DESE said it will ask people to go directly to the site and update details on their account.
DESE asked that anyone who clicked the link in the phishing email update their password immediately, along with any other accounts with that password.
The statement from DESE did not state which school districts were involved.
