Douglas County residents warned of email scam targeting property tax payments

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – The county treasurer is warning taxpayers about scammers pretending to be county officials.

The scammers send emails claiming recipients have unpaid property taxes and must pay via wire transfer or owe even more.

The email address used is almost exactly the same as the address for the real county treasurer’s office. The only difference is the domain at the end — dot-proton-dot-me — rather than dot-gov.

The treasurer says his office will never ask for payment via wire transfer and will never email from a “Proton Mail” account.
