Mayor of California City fights back against AI deepfake videos

California City Mayor Marquette Hawkins is taking a stand against artificial intelligence-generated videos that falsely depict him and spread misleading statements.

Hawkins described the videos as “kinda disgusting” and “middle-school level humor,” asserting that the citizens of California City are not falling for the deception.

The videos, which accuse him of corruption, have been circulating on social media platforms like Facebook and YouTube.

Hawkins stated, “They’re entirely fabricated… designed to spew misinformation to really mislead the public.”

In response, he announced on Facebook that he is working with his legal team to explore litigation options.

Los Angeles civil trial attorney Tre Lovell noted that while there is currently no legal precedent for AI video-related civil litigation due to free speech rights, California is considering legislation to address deceptive deepfakes.

Hawkins humorously remarked on the creators of the videos, saying, “It almost seems like they’re superfans… they act like they can’t get enough of me living rent-free inside their heads.”
