We had already heard that Instagram was going to stop showing Reels from content aggregator accounts or accounts that copy other people’s posts in order to boost original content.
However, this now extends to image carousels and static photos.
What is changing in Instagram’s algorithm
Adam Mosseri has announced that starting in June, the platform will look at what content you have published over the past month, and if most of what you have posted is content from other accounts, your content will not be recommended to people who do not follow you. Which, considering how almost every social network currently works, is… very bad news (to put it mildly).
To find out whether your account is affected by this new update, under which Instagram will not show your content in “For You” because it considers what you publish to be recycled memes, copy-pastes, or other people’s posts, you just need to:
- Go to your account
- Click on “Account status”
- There you will see whether anything is out of line.
In any case, if you believe they made a mistake in classifying you this way, you can file an appeal. However, if you actually are a content aggregator and want to improve your reach, you can “remix” the content by making it your own style, sharing your opinion on the topic while keeping the original authorship intact. Another way to do it, as Mosseri recommends, is to hit the repost button or create a collaborative post, once again giving credit to the original creator.
With this update, they want “to be the best possible platform for original content creators”.
