Money is a crucial part of any RPG journey, whether you’re picking up so much junk that your protagonist is constantly encumbered, or forcing Lydia to carry your burdens. In Octopath Traveler 0, money is known as “Leaves” and you’re going to need a lot of it if you want to buy new equipment or Haggle with NPCs for valuable loot.
Your primary source of Leaves is combat. After you beat an enemy, you gain EXP. JP, and Leaves with some bonuses based on your actions. Face off against higher level enemies, or more powerful foes (such as elites and bosses) to gain more money. In addition, you get a fair number of Leaves by completing Side Stories, and opening chests around the world. But what if you need more? There are a few ways you can increase your monetary gain while exploring Orsterra!
WIP: This page is a work in progress, focused on your options in the early game. Stay tuned for mid/late game tips!

Sell Junk
As you explore the continent of Orsterra, you obtain lots of items, and some of them are more useful than others. Consumables are great, and equipment upgrades make you stronger in combat. But some items serve no purpose other than to be sold. You can tell these items apart because they all have the description of “Fetches a… …price if sold.” with words like “fair” indicating the relative value.
So whenever you go back to town, swing by a shop and sell your junk!
Sell Unwanted Equipment
If you have lower level equipment you no longer want, be sure to sell that as well. Generally equipment has a high base sell price meaning you get a significant chunk of Leaves for getting rid of your junk. There are some rarer pieces of equipment that you might want to hold onto but a good rule of thumb to follow is – if you can buy the item in the shop, and don’t think you’ll need it, sell. That way if you regret your choice you can always buy another copy later.
Haggle For a Discount
The Purchase Path Action is another good way to make money. This is an example of the old adage, you’ve got to spend money to make money. Instead of buying the item at full price, you can use the “Haggle” feature to get a discount. This means you obtain consumables or equipment you were going to buy anyway at a lower price or you get some junk that you can sell for a profit.
Collect Leaves With a Merchant
If you play a Protagonist Merchant, or recruit characters such as Tressa you can use the Collect skill to earn additional Leaves from enemies!
The amount of money you gain from this depends on the level, and strength of enemies. Early game this is a small amount of Leaves, but once you start encountering elites and bosses you get hundreds (or thousands) of Leaves. Boosting your Collect increases the odds of success.
You can only collect once per enemy, and there are some enemies where you can’t collect, but this is still a great way to get additional money.
Merchant Passive
After unlocking 4 skills on a Merchant Protagonist, or a recruitable Merchant like Tressa you gain the “Extra Leaves” passive which increases the money you get after a battle. This effect is not cumulative, so there’s no reason to stack multiple, but it does make Merchants a particularly valuable inclusion in your party if you’re looking to maximize your moneymaking potential.
Steal Stuff
This next method doesn’t directly increase your money, but it does get you more items which you can use (saving money since you don’t need to buy them) or sell for a profit. If you’re playing a Protagonist Thief, or have the Aeber’s Artifice ultimate, you can steal items from your enemies.
Like with Collect, the exact items you get depend on the enemy and their level. In some cases you get Mastered skills, which are great for giving you options in combat, but don’t help you make money. But you get enough useful or valuable items that it’s worth stealing whenever the opportunity presents itself.
