PITTSFIELD — If you opened your email and saw a message from the Civil Process Division of the Berkshire County’s Sheriff Office, be warned: The email could be a scam.
The division of the Berkshire County’s Sheriff Office was hacked Wednesday, with emails being sent out asking the recipient to “login to view the secure message.”
Despite the email coming from the official department email address, these links lead to a site belonging to “Muncul Nigeria Limited.”
The company in question focuses on “distributing Sido Muncul products to Nigeria and other African countries,” according to the website’s description on Google.
It’s likely that possible victims would be asked to give sensitive information such as email addresses, passwords or personal details to the website. Recipients are advised not click on any links within in the email.
Despite the email coming from the official Civil Process Divisions of Berkshire County’s Sheriff Office, it has two different links that lead to an external website that could contain harmful content.
The Berkshire County Sheriff’s Officed declined comment about the hack.
