What has happened – Search has entered a new era
The old model – ranking websites through keywords – is being displaced by AI-driven discovery. Google’s AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini now pull from TikTok clips, Reddit debates, YouTube Shorts, blogs, and forums to generate answers.
The impact is already visible in the numbers. Ahrefs found that when AI Overviews appear, the top organic page’s click-through rate drops by 34.5%. Some publishers report traffic losses of up to 80% as their articles get buried beneath AI summaries. Authoritas data shows sites once holding position #1 on Google can lose 79% of search traffic if pushed below AI results.
Consumers are shifting too. 43% now use AI daily, and 75% say they rely on these tools more than a year ago. At the same time, 42% feel Google Search is less useful on its own. And because people search in natural, conversational language, AI platforms increasingly source from community spaces where those conversations already exist. Reddit and LinkedIn are among the top platforms referenced in AI answers.
This is the rise of “zero-click” search, where the answer lives in the summary itself. The battle is no longer for clicks, but for inclusion in the dialogue.
Why it matters – Trust is social
Decisions are shaped less by polished brand websites and more by peer proof and authentic community voices. Social perception has become search perception, meaning visibility and trust are now defined in real time by community dialogue. For brands, this is both a challenge and an opportunity – the ability to influence trust now lies in how well you engage with and empower real voices.
Our POV – What should brands do?
1. Play Where People Talk
AI search is becoming conversational, and communities are the raw “source data” shaping brand perception. To secure visibility in both Google SERPs and AI results, brands need to show up authentically where people already talk.
TLDR: If you’re not present in community spaces, you won’t exist in AI answers.
2. Optimise for Conversations
Search engines and AI don’t just index static pages, they learn from dialogue. This means brands need to shift from “content as broadcast” to “content as dialogue,” building discoverability through ongoing, community-driven discussion.
TLDR: Every comment, review, or reply is now SEO fuel.
3. Empower Advocates
In the age of AI summaries, peer voices often outrank brand voices. Empowering advocates, be they fans, creators or employees, ensures the most authentic narratives surface first. Trust comes from people, not polished statements, and advocates are the bridge between brand values and community validation.
TLDR: The most powerful SEO strategy is turning your community into your voice.
To wrap up…
Managing social media is no longer just about engagement and response, it’s about aiding and driving discoverability. The future of SEO is “social SEO” where brands need to ensure positive narratives are seeded, shared, and searchable across Reddit, TikTok, YouTube, and beyond. Brands that show up where people talk, who optimise for dialogue, and empower community advocates will own the narratives that define trust in this new search era.
The bottom line is that communities are the now the new front page of search. Those who invest in them will own the answers that surface when it matters most.
