From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. President Donald Trump has slapped a mocked-up image of his face onto the surface of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool – in algae green.

Trump had the pool drained and repainted an “American-flag blue” earlier this year, only for the water to quickly turn green from algae blooms and for the blue paint to begin peeling off shortly after.

On Thursday night, the commander-in-chief uploaded a seemingly A.I.-generated version of the pool to his Truth Social account, depicting the pool with bright blue water. Stamped on its surface, though, is a silhouette of his face in a shade of green not dissimilar to the algae blooms that have plagued the pool.

Trump has long maintained that the peeling paint and appearance of algae blooms are the work of vandals.

The president previously hit out the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, Jeanine Pirro, after she decided to drop charges against former Olympian canoeist David Hearn, who had been accused of damaging the pool.

In a court filing on Tuesday night, though, Pirro’s office left open the possibility that it may try to prosecute Hearn once again.

“Should the case be re-presented to a grand jury based on newly discovered evidence, any re-indictment of the case would not constitute harassment,” the filing read.

The Reflecting Pool post was just one of several AI-generated images the president shared on Truth Social overnight.

Trump also posted an A.I.-generated image of himself in the James S. Brady Press Briefing Room in the White House, standing in the spot usually occupied by outgoing White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.

“The Best Press Secretary,” the title of the image of Trump reads.

Leavitt, who had long been one of the president’s most devoted defenders, resigned unexpectedly last week. She said in a statement on X that she “cannot be the best mom” to her children while serving as the White House press secretary.

The commander-in-chief followed that post with an A.I.-generated picture depicting himself striding through the halls of what appears to be the White House.

And he also re-posted an A.I.-generated image he shared earlier this week, dragging the Keystone XL pipeline out of a grave with his bare hands.

Beside the president is a gravestone reading “Buried by Biden” in an apparent reference to a decision by Trump’s predecessor to a revoke permit needed for the project to go ahead.
