SUMMIT COUNTY, Colo. (KKTV) – Deputies said a woman in Summit County last week was defrauded of nearly $50,000 after a scam email prompted her to call a phone number she believed was for PayPal.
Deputies said the woman believed the scam email was real and her account had an alleged fraudulent transaction.
The scammers convinced her to share her computer screen with them and quickly transferred a large sum of money from one of her accounts into her checking account, deputies said. They then told her something had gone wrong and advised her to transfer the money to the scammers.
Deputies said that, not knowing the money had come from her own account, she agreed and sent them the money.
Deputies said later that week she noticed her cursor on her computer screen was moving on its own and her stocks were being sold off.
The fraud was immediately reported, deputies said, and her accounts were locked. It was at that point that the original fraud was discovered.
Deputies said an investigation into this scam is ongoing.
