Shelter Volunteer Takes Dog for Fun Day Out—but Now There’s a Problem

A volunteer told Newsweek how she took a shelter dog out on an adventure day, but when they came back, the pup refused to leave her car and go back to his kennel.

In a heartbreaking Instagram video shared on Wednesday by Julie Saraceno, a volunteer at the Benton Franklin Humane Society in Kennewick, Washington, under the username @jsaraceno, the pup insists on staying in the passenger seat of the car while the poster tries to get him out of the vehicle.

“F*** a breakup, have you ever taken a shelter dog out for an adventure, and he refuses to get out of your car when you get back?” reads layover text in the clip.

“This is Horton. We had a wonderful time on our adventure, but I sadly have a full house so I’m unable to adopt. He’s adoptable at the Benton Franklin Humane Society in Kennewick, Washington.”

The poster says in the caption: “I volunteer because it’s what I can do to help. I’m posting this in the hope that his future family sees and comes to adopt him.”

Saraceno told Newsweek that not too much is known about Horton’s backstory, because he was found as a stray and transferred from another shelter. All the staff know is that Horton is estimated to be 10 months old, and that he is the happiest dog at the shelter.

Saraceno said: “He always jumps up on the kennel door to greet you. He gets along well with other dogs, too! He has little shorty legs, so I would guess he is a Welsh corgi mix.

“I think he would be the perfect family dog. He would love to have siblings (human and dog). He’s so good with everyone. He is ready to adopt now.”

The video quickly attracted the attention of users on social media and has so far received over 22,000 views and more than 2,500 likes on the platform.

One user, Nutterbutterrescuepupper, commented: “I had that happened when I volunteered. Still remember the pup. His name was Buddy. Thank you for highlighting these dogs.”

Tammy.viscotha posted: “He is adorable.”

Nocturnalceo added: “Prayers for sweet Horton.”
