Scam email posing as Xfinity warns users of account discontinuation
A scam email claiming to be from Comcast Xfinity has been circulating again, warning users their accounts will be discontinued unless they upgrade through a provided link.
Signs of the scam
The email claims that an “old version” of the user’s email account is about to be discontinued and includes a link to “upgrade” to the latest version of the mailbox.
Several viewers have reported spotting the scam by examining the sender’s email address, which originates from Microsoft Outlook or Hotmail rather than Comcast Xfinity.
Additionally, the email’s salutation is generic, addressing recipients as “Dear User” or using their email address instead of their first and last name.
“Just about every reputable company is going to address its established customers by their first and last name,” News 8’s Consumer Investigative Reporter Brian Roche said.
How to protect yourself
Consumers are reminded to always check the sender’s email address and salutation to identify scam emails. Clicking on links in suspicious emails is strongly discouraged.
