Savannah’s newest pro sports franchise will serve as an economic boost
The Indoor Football League team also unveiled its name.
SAVANNAH, Ga. —
Savannah’s newest professional sports franchise now has a name and its first season in the Indoor Football League is set to begin in March.
And that franchise is not only set to provide some exciting entertainment, but it will provide a financial boost for the city of Savannah as well.
There was plenty of pomp and circumstance at Enmarket Arena Thursday as Savannah’s latest professional sports franchise was officially welcomed to town.
And there was even more excitement when its official name, the Leprechauns, was revealed. All of this is leading up to the first game in March and a significant economic impact on the Savannah area economy.
“A great sports town like Savannah now has another great addition to that sports family,” said Bert Brantley, president and CEO of the Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce. “And the Savannah Leprechauns are going to be here during a time where the Ghost Pirates are off. So, they’re going to fill the Enmarket Arena for more nights, which will be great.”
“We do estimate that we could generate between $8 million and $10 million annually for the community through visitors, hotels, restaurants, local businesses, vendors, employment and other activities surrounding our games and events,” said George Mathis, CEO and president of the Savannah Leprechauns.
So, Savannah’s newest professional sports franchise now has a name, and there is plenty of excitement before the start of the season comes this spring. But it also tells you a great deal about the city of Savannah to be able to attract a team to the city.
“Everything came back to Savannah,” said Troy Waranka, general manager of the Savannah Leprechauns. “The support community, the community outreach, the residents, the community, you know, not just Savannah, but Chatham County, all the way out to Statesboro, Hilton Head. You know, we realized that Savannah was going to be our home.”
And the Leprechauns plan to be active in the community.
They are donating 100 tickets for every home game to disadvantaged children, youth organizations and local youth athletic programs, and they are setting up a community fund to help various organizations.
