Pet owners struggle to get remains back from shuttered San Marcos business

Angel Paws closed without warning and customers say the owner isn’t returning emails or phone calls.

SAN MARCOS, Calif. — Several pet owners across the county are facing difficulties retrieving their deceased pets’ remains from Angel Paws Pet Cremation, which abruptly closed its doors. The business’s sudden closure has left customers like Toni Faust and Sharron Thompson uncertain about the whereabouts of their beloved animals and unable to properly lay them to rest.

“I’m not confident that we know where our dog is right now. Where Puppy is right now. I’m not confident, and that really hurts,” said Faust.

Faust brought her dog, Puppy, to Angel Paws in July after he passed away. She was told the cremation process would take three weeks, but five weeks later, she found the business’s doors locked and phone disconnected.

Thompson, who took her pet Daisy to Angel Paws in June, expressed similar frustration. “It’s just wrong… I mean, we’re having to beg to get our animals back,” she said.

The owner of Angel Paws, Chris Settle, provided an email address to CBS 8 for customers to set up appointments to retrieve their pets’ remains. However, both Faust and Thompson report sending emails without receiving any response.

“We haven’t heard anything – it’s like crickets. There’s nothing there,” said Thompson.

Attempts to reach Settle through a provided phone number were unsuccessful, with callers encountering an unset voicemail box.

CBS 8 contacted Settle again, who reiterated his commitment to returning emails and calls. He also set a goal of returning remains by the end of next week.

Faust, whose dog died in her arms, is pleading for honesty from Settle about whether customers will ever receive their pets’ remains. “I want him back so I can take care of him in the proper way because that’s what he deserves,” said Faust.
