New York Courts Introduce AI Use Policy | Local

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) — Chief Administrative Judge Joseph A. Zayas has introduced a policy to guide the use of artificial intelligence within the New York Unified Court System.

Interim Policy on the Use of Artificial Intelligence, developed by a committee formed in April 2024, sets clear principles for the responsible and ethical use of AI.

It applies to all judges, justices and nonjudicial employees using UCS-owned devices or performing UCS-related work.

The policy emphasizes fairness, accountability, and security, particularly in the use of generative AI, and restricts usage to UCS-approved AI tools.

Judge Zayas highlighted the importance of ongoing AI training for all employees with computer access.

First Deputy Chief Administrative Judge Norman St. George said, “With this interim policy, the court system, through the Advisory Committee on AI and the Courts’ thoughtful study, is tackling head-on the responsible integration of this evolving technology in the workplace. We have a duty to carefully explore—and fully understand—AI’s strengths and limitations, so that we may use it responsibly, intelligently, and optimally, in furthering the delivery of justice across the State.”
