New email scam targets North Alabama United Methodists

March 12, 2026

Some people have received a fraudulent email claiming to be from the North Alabama Conference that threatens to suspend their church membership. This email is a scam! Do not click any links in the message. Report it as spam and delete it.

How to spot fraudulent emails

Legitimate correspondence from the North Alabama Conference will only come from one of these email domains:

  • @umcna.org
  • @naconf.org
  • @brtapp.com

No other characters or letters should appear after the @ sign.

To verify any suspicious message, click “forward” and scroll down to see the original sender’s email address. If it does not match one of the domains above, it is not from the Conference.

What you can do

This type of fraud is called an identity spoofing scam, a scheme in which bad actors impersonate a trusted organization to deceive recipients into clicking malicious links. Reports indicate that these scams are on the rise and increasingly target churches and faith-based organizations across the country.

Please share this information with your congregation. Awareness is one of the most effective tools against fraud. Encourage members to pause before clicking any link in an unexpected email — especially one that creates a sense of urgency or threatens consequences.

Let’s all stay alert, stay informed and stay safe!
