MUSKEGON, MI – Muskegon officials are warning of an email scam targeting local contractors, property owners and others.
Scammers are sending emails that appear to be official communications, often including attachments or requesting wire transfers or ACH payments, according to an alert posted on the city’s website.
The city posted an example of a scam email on its website. It referenced real city departments, addresses and employees.
The emails are not coming from official city email addresses, which end in “@shorelinecity.com.”
Emails may reference real projects or programs and may include attachments of fake invoices.
The city advised not to pay or provide personal or banking information if the invoice seems suspicious.
For those who receive a suspicious email, the city advises doing the following:
- Check the sender’s email carefully. Look for addresses that do not end with @shorelinecity.com.
- Do not click links or pay any requested fees.
- Forward the email to scam@shorelinecity.com to verify legitimacy before taking any action.
- Keep the email and attachments for reference if reporting.
“Stay vigilant” the alert stated. “Scammers are using increasingly convincing tactics, including AI-generated content, to target individuals and businesses.”
