Los Angeles Sparks announce plans for $150 million practice facility in latest improvement for WNBA

The Los Angeles Sparks are building a massive practice facility in Southern California.

The franchise announced Wednesday that it will open a 55,000-square-foot practice and training facility in El Segundo in 2027. The facility will cost the team $150 million, which the team says marks the largest investment in the history of women’s sports by a single team.

The facility will feature two regulation basketball courts, an indoor-outdoor player sanctuary, weight room and training spaces, dedicated nap rooms, an outdoor spa pool and more.

“We’re building a place where Sparks players can be at their best on and off the court,” owner Eric Holoman said in a statement. “From cutting-edge training and recovery spaces to family and community areas, every corner of this facility was designed with them at the center. It reflects our commitment to our team, our fans, and the city of Los Angeles, and sets a new standard for what a professional sports organization can provide for its athletes.”

Both the NBA’s Los Angeles Lakers and the NFL’s Los Angeles Chargers have practice facilities in El Segundo.

The Sparks’ move to add a new practice facility mimics what other teams in the league have done in recent years. The Las Vegas Aces moved into an 88,000-square-foot facility in 2023. The Dallas Wings are building a practice facility currently, too, which is set to open next year. The Toronto Tempo has a temporary practice facility set up while they work on plans for one of their own as they enter the league next year. The Portland Fire, which will also enter the league next year, are set to share a new practice facility with the NWSL’s Thorns FC.

The Sparks went 21-23 this past season, the first under head coach Lynne Roberts, and narrowly missed a postseason berth. The franchise hasn’t been to the playoffs since 2020.
