Kids read to adoptable pets at the Humane Society of Genesee County’s Furry Tales

FLINT, Mich. — Kids got a chance to read stories to a captivated audience of cats, dogs and even bunnies at the Humane Society of Genesee County on Saturday.

The shelter held an orientation for their Furry Tales program, which allows kids to stop by anytime and pull up a blanket and story book with the animals.

During the event 16 children participated, and after a short behind the scenes tour, they began reading to adoptable animals at the shelter.

Heidi Molyneux, the cruelty investigator and kids program manager at the Humane Society says the event is beneficial for both kids and animals.

“especially for our real shy ones ones that don’t have a lot of socialization, the kids reading to them really helps them come out of their shell,” said Molyneux. “It also helps the kids improve their reading skills. Animals don’t care if they mispronounce a word or if they’re reading the story word for word.”

Molyneux also said it is not uncommon for families to leave with a new pet after reading to them.
