Yogyakarta (ANTARA) – The Indonesian government has urged stakeholders to incorporate ethical considerations into the development and use of artificial intelligence (AI).
Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Nezar Patria said on Friday that cases of AI misuse, such as manipulating other people’s photos, may occur when the technology is used without ethical guidance.
“Therefore, we urge that the use and development of AI incorporate an ethical perspective. In other words, it must be used ethically,” he said after opening the AI Talent Factory workshop at Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta.
The government is currently preparing an AI policy document to complement the national AI roadmap, which is expected to be issued as a presidential regulation in the near future.
“We hope AI development takes ethical aspects into account, what we call ethics by design,” Nezar said.
He explained that this approach integrates ethical considerations from the design stage, including whether certain types of content should be generated.
“For example, content involving religious sentiment or pornography. We can see how easily generative AI applications can produce images containing such elements,” he said.
He called on developers to remain mindful of these risks and develop appropriate technological safeguards.
“We are not restricting innovation. However, when a product is released to the public, ethical aspects must be taken into account,” he added.
Separately, Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka also emphasized the importance of ethics and critical thinking in AI use during a recent visit to Bandung, West Java.
“The use of AI is very important in daily life, especially to support teachers and educators and to ease students’ activities. On the other hand, we must also understand that AI has rules and ethics,” he said.
