The service provider is advising customers on what to look for in a scam that seeks to steal login credentials.
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Huntsville Utilities is alerting customers about a phishing email scam that impersonates the utility company and attempts to steal login credentials.
The fraudulent email appears to come from a Huntsville Utilities commercial applications employee and prompts recipients to click a link that directs them to enter Office 365 login information, according to the utility company.
The fake email can be identified by its use of the SharePoint logo and the words “Huntsville Utilities” displayed in green text.
Huntsville Utilities is advising customers not to click the link or enter any login information, as it is an attempt to steal personal credentials.
“If you receive this email, treat it as fraudulent and delete it immediately,” the utility company said in a statement.
Customers who need to confirm account information are encouraged to use the HSVUTIL app, the My HU web portal, or call 256-535-1200.
The utility company has not disclosed how many customers may have received the fraudulent emails or whether any personal information has been compromised.
