TikTok creators in Kenya are making money from their content through multiple monetization streams, dispelling myths about earning potential on the platform in Africa.
The short-form video platform has rolled out several revenue-generating features specifically available to Kenyan creators, with some tools being tested across Sub-Saharan Africa for the first time in recent months.
Four Active Revenue Streams
- LIVE Gifts allow creators to earn real money during live broadcasts. Viewers send virtual gifts that appear on screen, which convert directly into cash payments. The feature creates real-time interaction while incentivizing quality live content.
- Video Gifts extend monetization beyond live streaming. Creators can earn from pre-recorded videos through viewer contributions, meaning every uploaded video becomes a potential income source.
- Subscription Model lets creators charge monthly fees for exclusive content and perks. This works for both live streamers and regular video creators, providing consistent recurring revenue from dedicated fans.
- Work With Artist Feature pays creators to promote songs in their videos. This newer tool, recently tested across Sub-Saharan Africa, creates viral video campaigns where creators earn based on video performance while helping artists gain exposure.

Platform Commitment to African Creators
“African creators on TikTok have been rewarded for their creativity contrary to popular belief. We have a number of tools that our Community across the continent can currently benefit from,” said Boniswa Sidwaba, Head of Content Operations for Sub-Saharan Africa.

The company continues developing new monetization products specifically for the region, with creators able to access these tools through TikTok Studio’s Creator Monetisation Centre.
Unlike other social platforms that may limit monetization by geography, TikTok has made these revenue streams actively available to creators in Kenya, contributing to the country’s growing creator economy.
