HIXSON, Tenn. — A woman and her two dogs are safe after Dallas Bay Volunteer Fire Department responded to a fire at her home Sunday evening.
According to a release from Hamilton County Office of Emergency Management, a smoke alarm went off in the home, waking the woman from her sleep as heavy smoke filled the residence.
At 9 p.m., she called 911 reporting flames coming from the side of her home, where a fire reportedly started in her HVAC system.
Firefighters with Dallas Bay VFD arrived on scene at the 1300 block of Cenora Lane and quickly tackled the flames, preventing extensive damage to the home.
Both the woman and her two dogs escaped without injuries, and damages are reported at around $10,000.
A spokeswoman for the department says this incident is a reminder of why having fully operable smoke alarms in residences is so important.
