It can be hard to tell what is AI and what isn’t these days. And when you see a headline about a blade-wielding crab attacking a dog, your first instinct may be to assume that it’s fake news.
However, it doesn’t seem like this armed crab is a product of AI generation. That’s because the Instagram clip shared by bestdad_ceo appears legitimate enough to be the real deal, which means that there’s something new for people in Florida to fear. Of course, the absurdity of the video caused it to go viral, and it racked up nearly a million likes just days after it was posted.
The story was also covered by national outlets like the New York Post, which determined that the aggressive crab was likely a blue land crab. According to the outlet, these crabs are commonly found within 5 miles of the coastline. However, they typically aren’t armed when you see them in the wild.
It would appear that the “Florida man” stereotype has reached a new level now that it apparently encompasses crabs as well. Naturally, the internet has a lot to say about this situation.
The Crab Was Apparently Defending Itself Against a Dog
In the short clip, the crab appears to have grabbed the blade part of a knife in what one can only assume is self-defense, as a small poodle barks in the background. The Instagrammer can be heard talking to the dog as he reaches down to grab the crab, saying, “Dude, are you kidding me right now?”
He then laughed as he picked up the crab, calling out to his dog Summer, telling her not to mess with this “gangster a– crab.”

Blue Land Crabs Aren’t Known to be Aggressive
Perhaps the funniest part of this whole video is that these types of land crabs are notoriously shy. According to the University of Florida’s IFAS Extension, these giant crabs are usually shy and don’t like interacting with humans. That being said, the IFAS Extension website notes that they can become agitated if they are caught or handled. While the website only mentioned a “memorable pinch,” it seems like at least some of these crabs are capable of a much more robust defense when there are weapons around. Of course, this stabby crabby is obviously just a fluke, and it doesn’t appear that these crabs pose much of a threat to the humans (or dogs) living in the region.
