RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) – Pennington County officials are reminding residents to watch out for scam emails that appear to come from the county’s Planning & Zoning Department.
The fraudulent messages often include invoices or instructions asking recipients to make a payment or take action. County officials stress that the emails are not legitimate and are not being sent by Planning & Zoning staff.

“We want residents to know these emails are still circulating,” Planning & Zoning Director Brittney Hand said. “If you receive an invoice or message claiming to be from our department, don’t assume it’s real. Contact our office directly before taking any action.”
Officials noted that Planning & Zoning does not routinely send invoices by email, and most payments are handled directly through the office.
Residents are encouraged to be cautious of unexpected emails requesting payments, asking them to click links, download attachments or follow instructions related to county services. Anyone with questions about a message claiming to be from the department should contact Planning & Zoning directly to verify it.
