Email scam claims $1,000 deposit to trick recipients
A fraudulent email claiming a $1,000 deposit in recipients’ accounts is being flagged as a scam, with scammers attempting to collect personal information through a suspicious link.
Fake $1,000 Cash App offer
Consumer investigator Brian Roche described the scam as one that “screams the word ‘scam’ the second you look at it.”
The email claims to be from Cash App and congratulates the recipient, stating that a $1,000 balance is available for their account. However, instead of addressing the recipient by their first and last name, it uses their email address—a clear sign of a scam.
One viewer who received the email dismissed it quickly, noting that she does not use Cash App or any other payment apps.
Warning against clicking the link
The email instructs recipients to validate their information to complete the transaction and includes a “Confirm Here” link.
Roche said the link was disabled when he checked it, but it likely would have asked for personal information from anyone who clicked on it.
“The vast majority of people who might get this email will spot the scam right away,” Roche said. “But scammers persist, hoping that even just a few people fall for it—they get their money. Don’t be one of those people!”
Scammers continue to target individuals with tactics like these, hoping to exploit even a small number of victims.
