DeWitt Twp. Police warn of email scam after woman loses nearly $10K

DEWITT TWP., Mich. (WILX) – DeWitt Township police are warning residents about a recent scam after an elderly resident reported losing $9,500.

Police said the woman was targeted after receiving an email from someone she believed was her daughter. When she opened the email, her computer froze and a security alert appeared, instructing her to call a phone number.

The resident called the number and spoke with someone who told her she needed a new security program for her computer. When the woman said she already had a security program, the caller told her she would be issued a refund.

Police said the resident then provided her bank account information. The scammer sent her a fake bank statement showing that she had been refunded too much money.

The woman was instructed to go to her bank and wire the overpaid amount to an account in Florida, which she did. She later realized she had been defrauded of $9,500.

DeWitt Township police are reminding residents to use caution when opening emails and to never wire money or provide bank account information to people they do not know.
