COLUMBIA — The Central Missouri Humane Society approved 30 short-term foster applications to give animals a home during bitter cold and winter weather this weekend.
The Humane Society held a pet pickup for both cats and dogs Friday afternoon for the animals’ short-term stays, which will last until Monday or Tuesday.
Casey said everyone who applied for a short-term foster came to pick up their pet.
“… We are desperately looking for foster parents to help take some stress off our staff,” said Michelle Casey, associate director and campaign manager of CMHS. “Even when there’s snowstorms, holidays, you name it, we are still here showing up taking care of our pets.”
CMHS tries to make the foster application process as easy as possible, asking basic questions to find a good fit, Casey said.
“We try to make all of our fostering really easy,” Casey said. “We provide all the supplies — you just provide the love.”
Casey said there is no cost to short-term fostering because the Humane Society provides supplies including beds, blankets and food. The Humane Society also has an after-hours line in case of a veterinary emergency, Casey said.
CMHS is always looking for foster families — especially what Casey called unicorn fosters.
“Someone who has no cats, dogs or kids,” Casey said. “Those unicorn fosters that can give really give them that extra TLC that they need in a really low-stress home environment.”
Casey said several unicorn fosters came to the pickup event Friday.
Information about volunteering and fostering is available on the Central Missouri Humane Society website.
