BROKEN BOW — The Broken Bow Nebraska Chamber of Commerce is warning area businesses and residents about a malicious email scam that appears to come from a legitimate local email address.
According to the Chamber, an email received Tuesday appeared to come from a Chamber member using a legitimate Broken Bow United Methodist Church email address.
The Chamber is urging anyone who receives the message not to open the email, click any links or download attachments. Recipients are advised to delete the message immediately.
Officials said they have been informed that opening the malicious content could allow it to access a user’s email contacts and potentially send similar messages to others. It is not yet known what other information could be compromised.
Anyone who has already opened or interacted with the email is encouraged to run a virus or security scan on their device, change their email password, and contact an IT professional for assistance.
The Chamber also reminded people to exercise caution, even when an email appears to be from someone they know. Anyone uncertain about a message should contact the apparent sender directly before opening links or attachments.
Businesses are also encouraged to share the warning with employees and coworkers.
