So There I Was.
Early Saturday morning, I was sitting at my workstation, typing away to my ‘lil heart’s content when suddenly…
I saw IT.
Yes, IT.
No, not a horrific clown forgotten from some novel.
Instead, it was a rather dark blob bobbing up and down in the backyard to where I live, home to domesticated Mooses.
Of course, the next instant I recognized what I was seeing – some reaaaaaally large insect was caught in a spiderweb. And I’m talking large. Huge! Massive. Something that if I had encountered him outdoors, his name immediately would have been “Fred.”
(spoiler – those know of Camp Ling should immediately be able to guess what insect it turned out to be).
Anywhos!
So yep, it was fighting madly to escape a rather well-constructed web (web silk is *strong!*) and there was 0 chance of escape.

Now, let me digress to how my mom raised me – always (so long as the insect in question was NOT a hornet or mosquito) if you see something suffering, do something about it.
So! After I called over my husband to scope the situation out, he returned to the house and brought out a longer cane. I had already cut the lower anchors of the web but due to my (lack of) height, couldn’t reach the main web strand. Working as a teach, we were able to free the cicada
(and here’s the Camp Ling reference – during one of the 17 year swarms for whatever reason, my kids and I would call cicadas ‘Freds’ and collect their exoskeletons. I still have a bunch someplace in storage. But I digress).
and place him in the shade near the middle of a bush.
I couldn’t find him when I went out later, so I will choose to think he’s okay at this particular time.
Your takeaway?
Kindness.
It truly *does* shine.
Enjoy!
