EA’s skate. might be free to play, but once you’re in-game, currency is all over the place. Whether opening product boxes or just grabbing gear from the shop, you’ll quickly find that San Vansterdam is an expensive place to live and skate in 2025.
If you want to leave your basic board and outfit behind, though, earning one type of money in skate. is at least relatively easy. You won’t be able to get every item with the most easily available currency, but if luck works in your favor, you can get enough to carve out your own personality in the game.
How Skate’s Currency Options Work
Free & Paid Currency

skate. has two types of currency — San Van Bucks and Rip Chips. San Van Bucks, indicated with a pink logo, are skate.’s premium currency, which can be purchased for real-world money. The San Van Bucks bundles currently available are as follows:
- $4.99 – 500 San Van Bucks
- $9.99 – 1,050 San Van Bucks
- $24.99 – 2,800 San Van Bucks
- $49.99 – 5,900 San Van Bucks
- $99.99 – 12,000 San Van Bucks
Currently, missions and leveling rewards in skate. don’t appear to offer any San Van Bucks, even in small amounts. I received 250 thanks to participating in playtests, but otherwise, you’re likely out of luck. Items in the shop are purchased with San Van Bucks, so if you don’t want to spend real money, most shop functions will be useless.
The orange Rip Chips, on the other hand, are widely available as free, in-game rewards. If you look at the various challenges, tasks, and missions available in San Vansterdam, you can see how many Rip Chips you’ll get for completing each task.
How To Earn Rip Chips In Skate
Get That Cash Flow Started

Permanent challenges and missions will reward you Rip Chips in decent supply, while City Challenges that pop up on the map as limited-time offerings provide Rip Chips in smaller doses. Leveling up Neighborhoods by progressing in skate. opens up for Challenges to complete.
While shop items favor San Van Bucks over Rip Chips, you can use Rip Chips to open Product Boxes. This is skate.’s lootbox system, with randomized pulls among a pre-determined selection of possible rewards. The cost of opening a box varies, with the cheapest ones costing 150 Rip Chips, and opening a box will provide you with one item.
Earning money in skate. will ultimately happen naturally as you explore the map and complete challenges, but you can always take a look at the rewards ahead of time to maximize your cash flow. Unfortunately, you won’t get any of the premium currency that easily.
