Pinterest PINS is expanding its advertising playbook with new Visual Search Ads, giving brands another way to reach users precisely when they are comparing products and moving closer to a purchase. The launch strengthens Pinterest’s push beyond traditional inspiration-driven advertising and deeper into performance marketing, where advertisers increasingly demand measurable conversions and stronger returns on spending.
The new ad format was unveiled Thursday at Pinterest Presents, the company’s annual global advertiser summit.
Visual Search Ads will place brands directly inside Pinterest search results and pin close-ups, allowing advertisers to appear as users visually browse products, compare options and narrow purchasing decisions.
That positioning matters because Pinterest’s platform naturally captures users earlier in the shopping process than many traditional commerce platforms, but its long-term advertising opportunity depends on converting that discovery activity into measurable sales.
The ads are designed specifically for lower-funnel marketing objectives and will work with Pinterest Performance+, the company’s AI-powered advertising suite.
Pinterest said the new format will enter beta for eligible advertisers across all of its advertising markets in the coming weeks.
Investors Takeaway
The most important part of the launch is Pinterest’s continued shift toward performance advertising.
Brand-awareness spending can be volatile and difficult to measure, while advertisers typically allocate larger and more durable budgets toward platforms that can demonstrate direct customer acquisition and conversion.
Visual Search Ads could help Pinterest monetize one of its strongest assets: users arriving on the platform with an idea of what they want but without necessarily knowing which specific product or brand they will choose.
Investors should watch advertiser adoption, conversion improvements and whether Performance+ continues to lift returns on advertising spend.
If Pinterest can prove that visually driven discovery converts efficiently into purchases, it could strengthen pricing power and attract more performance-oriented advertising budgets.
The risk is execution. New formats only matter if advertisers see measurable returns and continue increasing spending. The next test will be whether Visual Search Ads materially improve Pinterest’s ability to turn user intent into revenue.
