This is a world where your words help others sell stuff. It’s weirdly powerful when you realize a three-sentence blurb can be the reason someone buys a mug, a hoodie, or a dragon-shaped soap bar. Small ecommerce sellers struggle with writing – they’re focused on selling, not describing.

And that’s where you swoop in like a friendly wordsmith superhero! With just a bit of practice and a free gig listing on Fiverr, Ko-fi, or your platform of choice, you can start making money with your keyboard and creativity. This gig is light, repeatable, profitable, and wildly scalable. And the best part? Every new product listing that pops up means a fresh opportunity to earn $5 – and eventually a whole lot more.

Your 10 Step Action Plan

Step 1: Browse Product Listings for Practice

Start by studying listings in the wild.

For example, on platforms like Etsy, find weak descriptions that are confusing, way too short, or just plain dull. Then look at bestselling items and read their descriptions aloud.

  • What emotions do they trigger?
  • Which words do they use?
  • Which listings feel alive?

Your job is to understand what works – and why – so you can reverse-engineer and create your own style. Keep a notebook or screenshot folder of the best (and worst) examples. When you see a bland listing, you should immediately think, “Oooh, I could fix that!” That’s your signal.

Step 2: Choose a Specific Gig Angle

Don’t be generic; instead, pick a lane. Sellers want someone who speaks their language. Instead of writing for “everyone,” offer a gig like “2 warm, cozy blurbs for handmade Etsy shops” or “Sassy descriptions for Amazon novelty gifts.”

Choosing a vibe makes you stand out more than saying you write “good stuff!”  Get weird. Get specific. If you love witchy candles or retro gamer gear, make your gig reflect that! Clients connect faster when they know you get their audience. Later on, you can always add more gig options.

But in the beginning? Niche = more of a cash magnet.

Step 3: Set Up a Fiverr or Ko-fi Listing

Once you’ve nailed your angle, set up your storefront. On Fiverr, use a strong gig title like “I write scroll-stopping Etsy product descriptions.”  Something simple, see?  And you can add gig extras like “5 products” or “Shopify store pack” right from the start.

On Ko-fi, you can get playful – name your gig “Give me your bland blurbs and I’ll make them sparkle ✨” and use emojis, personality, and gratitude-infused copy. Add a few screenshots of your sample blurbs or test projects. Remember, the more real you make your listing feel, the more likely people are to trust you with their store.

Step 4: Write 5 Sample Descriptions

Now you need samples that prove you can walk the walk.

Make up five pretend products – the funnier or more niche, the better – and write short descriptions for each. Aim for 2–3 punchy sentences that paint a mood and include one or two awesome selling points. Try things like a “Self-Care Cauldron Candle,” “Ironic Dad Joke T-Shirt,” “Gothic Planner with Skull Stickers,” or “Fanny Pack for Ferret Treats.”

Show your range!  Show your voice. And store them in a neat, shareable portfolio file so future buyers can see your work in action.

Step 5: Learn Basic SEO for Listings

You don’t need to become an SEO wizard. Just learn enough to sprinkle in relevant phrases naturally.

One nifty way is to use tools like Ubersuggest, Google autocomplete, or even Etsy’s search bar to see what terms people are typing. Then weave them into your product titles and first sentence of the blurb.

Another great tip?  Think like a shopper: Would you search “funny mug with sarcasm” or “12oz ceramic tumbler with black text”? Keywords help your clients get found, and if you include them in your copy, you’re now part-writer, part-secret marketer.

And that’s worth a lot more than $5.

Step 6: Offer a Low-Pressure $5 Starter Pack

Don’t overthink your first offer; just start super simple. Think  two blurbs for $5. Make it fast, friendly, and low-stress. Add-on options could include “Add keywords” or “Make it funnier” for a couple extra bucks. Once you’ve got that first order and a glowing review, bump it up – offer 5 descriptions for $15, or 10 for $25.

Why?  Because you’re not charging for words anymore – you’re charging for confidence, clarity, and conversions.
