Community Highlights: Meet Lisa Cumes of Core Copywriters – Voyage LA Magazine

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Cumes.

Hi Lisa, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
The story starts as a stay-at-home mom with 3 little kids. How to raise kids and make money. I started my business writing blogs and emails through quick project on Upwork. Getting paid $50 – $200 writing for strangers around the world. I was hooked. From there I branched out into copywriting, website copywriting, brand strategy. My first year finding clients in Upwork I earned $125,000… back in 2017. At that point, I drew a line in the sand and decided I was going full time into freelancing as a copywriter… and still got to be home full time with my kids.

Fast forward, 2026 and I’m still a website copywriter. Now with a team, training program and have worked with almost 400 clients earning close to $2M. While copywriting is a skill that is quickly being taken over by AI… the full circle of helping people find clarity, simplify their message, still sound like a human is in full demand.

After 9 years and talking with thousands of prospective clients, I’ve also learned that selling is a skill that can’t simply be outsourced to a bot, or AI agent. So, in addition to helping business owners, founders, startups, coaches, consultants get clear on their messaging and marketing… we are now helping them create a proven, repeatable sales funnel that doesn’t feel icky.

I’m excited for the future and adapting to the quick changes in the market. At the end of the day, people will still rely on getting feedback and clarity from other people when it comes to their marketing, sales, so they can build a business they are proud of.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Starting my business on Upwork, getting paid $50 a blog was not easy. Especially when I was a single mom with 3 kids. Paying rent when you’re only making a $1000 a week is hard. And Upwork (the freelancing platform) is a numbers game, so daily rejection comes with the territory.

When things got tough, the temptation to just ‘go get a job’ was always looming. Working for yourself, making all the decisions, and believing you have what it takes to succeed is not for the feint of heart.

At the moment, I’m struggling with the future of marketing, copywriting, and working with clients… it’s never ending decisions on which direction to go.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Many business owners struggle to communicate their product / service / big idea in a way that is simple and easy for customers to understand. They confuse customers on their website, marketing, social media and paid ads.

We help clients clarify their message, simplify their marketing and create an authentic brand story they are proud of. This messaging can be used for their website, sales pages, advertising, content and email marketing.

The biggest difference I bring to the table for my clients is honest and tough love feedback. Many business owners don’t have a sounding board, or anyone they trust to give them honest feedback. They have big ideas, and a team full of people who say ‘yes’, but not all ideas are clear or worthwhile.

Before we write any words, we help business owners, coaches, consultants, startups get crystal clear on who they are talking to, and what needs to be said. We help position them as the guide to their customers using the StoryBrand framework.

While many clients walk away with website copy and marketing messaging they love, what they give us the most feedback and thanks on is the internal clarity and confidence they get when it comes to understanding their customers and how to sell in a way that feels human and authentic.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
My advice for anyone starting out…. take messy action. Don’t wait until you’ve figured it out, or perfected your messaging to test it with other humans. You don’t know until you put it out into the market and get real feedback.

Read: Building a StoryBrand by Donald Miller. It will change the way you message and market your business… as well as lead your team, parent your kids and show up as a better partner.

Don’t take score too quickly. Celebrate the small wins, recognize that every step is feedback to let you know if you’re moving in the right direction. Don’t compare your first step in the journey with someone eles’s finish line.
