Meet Xena, our Adoptable Pet of the Week in Greater Portland
WESTBROOK, Maine —
This week’s featured adoptable pet from the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland is Xena, a large lovebug who wants to be wherever people are.
Matt Blanchard of the Animal Refuge League said Xena has never met a person who wasn’t immediately her new best friend.
At 85 pounds, Xena may be a bit on the big side for a lapdog, but she is perfect for anyone who is ready to be showered in unconditional love.
“She’s about as easy as it gets when it comes to placing a dog in a home,” Blanchard said. “She does great, like I said, with all sorts of different people. She does like dogs. She lived with dogs previously. She’s enjoyed meeting other dogs at the shelter. We think that she would do well with kids just because she has such a good temperament, but she is very large and strong. She snuggles with all of her might.”
Blanchard noted, however, that the Animal Refuge League is unsure about Xena’s feelings toward cats.

Anyone who is interested in meeting other adoptable pets can visit the Animal Refuge League’s shelter at 217 Landing Road in Westbrook between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., except on Wednesdays, when the shelter is closed for adoptions.
The Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland does adoptions on a first-come, first-served basis. On the days the shelter is open, sign-in sheets will be placed on the front door at 9 a.m. to track the order of arrival of adopters who show up early. People who arrive early are asked to remain on the campus once they sign in.
Dog owners who are interested in adopting dogs that are older than 6 months, including Xena, are required to have their dogs meet the adoptable pet before a new pet can be brought home.
