The Vice-Chancellor of Bingham University, Professor Haruna Kuje Ayuba, has warned researchers against compromising ethical standards as artificial intelligence, big data, robotics and digital connectivity reshape research and innovation.
Ayuba gave the warning on Thursday in Abuja at the 10th anniversary celebration of the university’s School of Postgraduate Studies and the 4th Annual Postgraduate Conference, themed “Navigating Research Ethics and Resilience in the 5th Industrial Revolution Era.”
He said the rapid advancement of emerging technologies had created unprecedented opportunities for innovation and societal development, while simultaneously presenting complex challenges relating to data privacy, informed consent, originality and artificial intelligence bias.
According to him, researchers must ensure that technological advancement does not undermine individual rights, ethical standards and public trust.
“It is imperative that we uphold the highest standards of research ethics amidst these rapid technological changes. Issues such as data privacy, informed consent, originality, and the potential for AI biases are already on the front burner,” he said.
The Vice-Chancellor urged researchers and institutions to prioritise transparency and accountability while developing clear ethical guidelines to prevent the misuse of emerging technologies.
Ayuba also identified resilience as essential for researchers seeking to navigate the uncertainties and ethical dilemmas associated with the emerging technological era.
He said researchers and institutions must cultivate adaptability, continuous learning and emotional strength to overcome setbacks and respond effectively to rapid technological changes.
“Building resilient research ecosystems involves fostering collaboration across disciplines, embracing innovative problem-solving, and maintaining a steadfast commitment to ethical principles even amid adversity,” Ayuba said.
Meanwhile, the Dean of the School of Postgraduate Studies, Professor Okoli Bamidele Joseph, said active postgraduate enrolment had risen to over 2,000.
He said the school had attained the GFGP Gold Tier certification for research excellence and introduced programmes including PhD by Product and the BHU–LSTM MPH programme.
