Communication skills have always been critical to career success, and they’ve become even more important in the AI era. AI can create content and produce slides, but it cannot do what people do best: inspire, influence, and engage clients. Communication skills are especially important for customer-facing technical professionals, including solutions engineers, field engineers, applied AI engineers, implementation engineers, solutions architects, technical consultants, and forward-deployed engineers. That’s because they communicate about complex technology in complicated customer environments, often with serious consequences if something goes wrong.
Technical Professionals Must Master Communication Skills
People in these roles were hired for their technical expertise, but their success increasingly depends on how well they communicate with customers. That’s a tall order. As AI increasingly handles coding, analysis, and technical tasks, the premium shifts to engineers who can listen, translate, build trust, exercise judgment, influence others, and connect technical possibilities to human needs.
Before focusing on communication techniques, adopt the mindset that leads to success in these roles: Your job isn’t to prove how much you know. It’s to make what you know valuable to the customer. The following communication tips will help you increase your impact as you connect technology with business results.
Communication Tip 1: Know and Address Your Audience
When communicating with clients, start with their problem, not your product. Before explaining what the technology can do, understand what the customer is trying to accomplish. Use the customer’s language. If they call something a ‘customer record,’ don’t repeatedly call it a ‘persistent entity object’ simply because that’s what your system calls it.
Speaking in their language doesn’t mean dumbing down what you share. Instead, translate the technical details and remove unnecessary jargon without making customers feel that you’re simplifying the subject for them. To build trust with customers, avoid language that could make them feel inadequate. Avoid words and phrases like ‘obviously,’ ‘simply,’ ‘just’ and ‘as you know’. What’s obvious to you may be completely foreign to them.
Communication Tip 2: Translate Tech into Business
Connect technical decisions to business impact. Don’t just say, “This architecture will reduce latency.” Add what that means: “Your customers will see results almost immediately.” Make complexity visible without making it overwhelming. Customers need enough information to make good decisions, not enough information to become engineers. Most importantly, don’t confuse the language of business with business jargon. “We leveraged our cross-functional synergies to operationalize a scalable, best-in-class solution that aligns key stakeholders and drives value across the enterprise.” It may not sound technical, but it doesn’t sound human either.
Communication Tip 3: Amp Up Your Presentation Skills
Presentation skills are among the most valuable skills in the age of AI, especially for customer-facing technical professionals. Presentations give you an unparalleled opportunity to inform, influence, and engage your clients. They often put the right people in the room and allow you to use rich media, demonstrate the technology, and respond to questions in real time. Delivering an engaging presentation is one of the best ways to grow your personal brand.
Pay special attention to virtual presentations. These cousins to in-person presentations come with special challenges. Your clients are watching from computers that also give them access to email, messages, and countless other distractions. And despite the evidence, we still think we can multitask. Those challenges make it harder to hold your audience’s attention, so you need to work even harder to be engaging. Vary your voice, use visuals deliberately, involve the audience frequently, and replace long explanations with demonstrations whenever possible.
Communication Tip 4: Tell Stories and Use Examples
One of the most powerful ways to increase engagement and explain complexity is through stories. “Another customer had a similar issue…’ can make an abstract technical concept immediately concrete while protecting confidentiality. Analogies, comparisons, and concrete examples are powerful tools for making complex ideas tangible. Use analogies carefully. A good analogy can explain in 20 seconds what a diagram takes five minutes to communicate. Just don’t stretch it until it breaks.
Communication Tip 5: and Ask Questions
ing is one of the most important of all communication skills. for the problem behind the problem. What a customer asks for isn’t always what they need. “We need feature X” may actually mean “Our people can’t complete this task quickly enough.” When the need isn’t clear, ask before you solve. Engineers are trained to find answers. Customer-facing engineers need to become excellent questioners first. “Tell me more about that” can be more valuable than an immediate solution. Get comfortable saying “I don’t know.” Credibility goes up, not down, when you say, “I don’t know, but I’ll find out.” Guessing confidently is considerably less charming.
Communication Tip 6: Be Present
You may show up with a plan and an agenda, but things won’t always unfold as expected. Being present means adapting in real time to what’s happening with your audience. Learn to read the room and match the depth of your content to the audience. Sure, you may have planned to share technical details, but if the CTO you expected isn’t in the room, be prepared to adjust. Be comfortable skipping or shortening that content. A CTO, product manager, procurement leader and end user may all need different versions of the same explanation. Check for understanding without testing people. Avoid “Do you understand?” Try: “Does that match what you’re seeing?” or “Would it help if I showed you an example?”
Communication Tip 7: Turn Expertise into Guidance
- Your goal is for the people you’re communicating with to leave with clarity and understanding. To make that happen:
- Lead with the answer. Give the headline first, then the explanation. Say, ‘Yes, we can do that. Here’s how…’ rather than offering five minutes of technical context before revealing the answer.
- Make it clear what are facts and what are recommendations. Distinguish between ‘Here’s what the system does’ and ‘Here’s what I recommend.’
- Surface trade-offs. Customers trust engineers who say, “Option A is faster, but option B gives you more flexibility.”
- Explain the reasoning behind your recommendations. “I’d recommend option B because…” builds trust and helps customers make decisions rather than merely follow instructions.
- End every conversation with clarity. What did we decide? What’s unresolved? Who owns what? What happens next?
