Dear Editor,
AS Essex families look for ways to entertain children over the summer holidays, I hope they’ll think twice before choosing greyhound racing.

The industry’s attempts to rebrand a gambling venue as “family fun” is desperate and ignores the dogs’ reality, which is far from fun. The industry’s own data shows 161 dogs died on British tracks and over 3,500 injuries last year alone. Behind the races are puppy farms, concrete kennel blocks, and even doping allegations. So rather than introducing children to an industry that treats animals this way, why not support one of the many local attractions Essex has to offer that don’t risk animals’ lives?
If readers are noticing more advertising for greyhound racing this summer, it’s because the industry knows it’s on the back foot with tracks closing, crowds dwindling, and more public concern than ever. I encourage fellow dog lovers to watch Animal Aid’s trailer for upcoming documentary The Secret Lives of Greyhounds: http://www.thesecretlivesofgreyhounds.org
With kindness,
