Dog Days of Summer event to bring tail-wagging fun

ST. CLAIR SHORES — Residents and guests are invited to bring the dogs out for a day of fun in the sun at the Dog Days of Summer event in St. Clair Shores.

The event will be held from noon to 8 p.m. on Aug. 8 at Blossom Heath Park located at 24800 Jefferson Ave.

Parks and Recreation Event Director Henry Bowman said the day will feature dock diving dogs, vendors, pet shelters and more. Vendors will have a wide variety of items for pets and humans alike. Bowman said everyone has enjoyed the event.

“Especially the dock diving dogs are a blast,” Bowman said.

Owners sign up for individual slots to allow their dogs to dive, but there will be an open diving time. Bowman asks eventgoers to be patient.

He said he’s looking forward to the new lure chasing event. Dogs will chase a lure around a course.

“I think it’s going to be a hoot watching the dogs chase this lure around,” Bowman said.

Food trucks will also be available.

Donna Hill owns SAVeD Rescue and came up with the idea for the event around three years ago.

“I just know that people love their animals and so I thought, what about a great event that’s geared just towards the animals with those types of vendors and things for dogs to do,” Hill said.

The first thing she thought of was the dock diving dogs due to its popularity. She also has two dogs of her own.

Organizers try to feature something different involving the dogs each year. For example, last year, they hosted a wiener dog parade and races at the park. This year, they have lure chasing activity and Frisbee catching.

Her favorite part is seeing all the people with their dogs.

“You get to see so many different breeds and I just love all of that,” Hill said.

Hill said the shelters will have some adoptable dogs at the event. Bowman asked eventgoers to make sure dogs are leashed when attending and said there will be times to sign up dogs for different activities.
